It was an instant replay of the game with the Eagles 3 weeks ago. Of course, we had to have the driving rain just like in the Monday night game to set the scene. The Eagles have now beat the Giants 7 times in a row and 11 of the last 12. The Giants have also lost 20 of 24 games against the Eagles going back to the 2008 playoff game in Giants Stadium! The Giants have lost the last 8 divisional games against the Eagles and Cowboys. You are headed nowhere if you can’t beat the best 2 teams in your division.
The Philadelphia Eagles are a gutsy and mentally tough team. They have been decimated by injuries especially in the second half of the season and all they do is find a way to win. Desean Jackson, Malik Jackson, Jeffrey, Sproles, and Darby are on IR. Out for this game, Zach Ertz, their only elite weapon and 1 of the top 3 tight ends in the league, Agholor, Pro Bowl LT, Jane Johnson, and Mills. Early in the second quarter Sanders, their leading running back, gets hurt and is out of the rest of the game. No fear, Boston Scott is here! Yes, the new Giant Killer, Boston Scott, who reminds me the next Brian Westbrook who always found a way to single handedly beat the Giants. Boston Scott had 54 yards rushing and 3 touchdowns. In the passing game he had 4 receptions on 6 targets for 84 yards. That gave him 138 yards in this game. In the week 14 game he had 59 yards rushing with a touchdown and 6 receptions on 6 targets for 69 yards for 128 yards in that game. The Eagles were going deep on their roster playing practice squad guys, Perkins and Burnett. Perkins had 50 yards on 4 receptions and a touchdown!
Carson Wentz has been the MVP over the past 5 weeks of the season. The Eagles have become the first team in NFL history where the quarterback threw for over 4000 yards and did not have 1 receiver who had over 500 yards! He is throwing to practice squad guys who are stepping up, running backs and backup tight ends. His only real wide out has been the nondescript Greg Ward!
The Eagles start the game after muffing the opening kickoff from their own 7. They drive to the Giants 38 and instead of kicking a 55-yard field goal in the rain they go for it on 4th and 7 and do not make it. The Giants get the ball in good field position but Smith gets called for holding and it killed the drive. The Eagles then get the ball on their 18-yard line and they drive 69 yards and have to kick a 31-yard field goal.
Both teams go 3 and out. The Giants go 3 and out again. However, they pinned Eagles to the 1-yard line on a great 61-yard punt. However, there was offensive holding on Chandler and the Giants had to punt again and the Eagles picked up 18 yards instead of being pinned on the goal line. Just another Giants mistake in a season of Giants mistakes.
The teams trade 3 possessions. The Giants get a 37-yard field goal on a drive aided by a roughing the passer penalty and we are tied 3-3. On the next series before the half, Wentz rolls right and throws across the field to the left edge of the field for a 24-yard touchdown to Perkins. Giants cornerback Baker was beat on this play like he has been many times this year. So, we go into the half. Eagles 10-3.
The Giants get the ball to start the second half. They put a scoring drive together culminating in a 20-yard Jones to Tate touchdown. The drive was aided by 2 Eagle penalties. At 10-10 at the 9:41 mark of the 3rd quarter, we have a game now.
On the next series, The Eagles put a 9 play 62-yard drive that only took 3:11. The Eagles are leading 17-10. It only took the Giants one play to tie the game. Barkley who had only gained a handful of yards per play up to this point broke through the linefor a 68-yard touchdown. So, the game that was lacking pointswas quickly tied up at 17.
We get to the fourth quarter and the Eagles kick a field goal a minute into it to take a 20-17 lead. What happens next is then turning point of the game. Jones bobbles a low shotgun snap; he gets it but never has total control and he gets hit and fumbles it. It was his 17th fumble and he has lost 11. He had 12 interceptions to go along with them including 1 today. The Giants were -2 in turnover ratio today dropping them to a tie for last with the Chargers at -17! At -2 in turnover ratio you have over an 80% chance to lose the game as happened today. The Eagles recover at the 2 after it looked like the Eagles scored. On the next play, who else, Scott scores and the game is virtually over. The Eagleshave a 27-17 lead at 13:03 of the fourth quarter.
The Giants and Eagles trade the next 3 possessions with 3 and outs. With 8:00 minutes left in the quarter, the Giants go for it on 4th and 2 and Barkley gets stopped for no gain on a slow developing play. The Eagles take it over at the Giants 38-yardline. On 3rd and 13 Wentz throws a short pass to who else, Boston Scott, who goes for 39 yards down to the 2-yard line. On the next play Scott walks into the end zone for his third touchdown. He put a bow on the third horrible season for the New York Football Giants.
They have won 3 games, 5 games and 4 games the last 3 years. They finished 12-36 which is the WORST record in the NFL forthe past 3 years. They lead these bad teams in losses: Browns 13-34-1, Bengals 15-33, Jets 16-32 and the Cardinals 16-31-1.
The main problems for Shurmur and Bettcher are that they repeated the same problems game after game without making adjustments. Both Eagles games are a microcosm of the season for the Giants. The Giants learned nothing from the last loss from the Eagles just 3 weeks ago. The Eagles stacked the box and dared Jones to beat therm. Wentz killed the Giants in bothgames with the short pass and screen game. Bettcher never figured that out! There was miscommunication in the defense that we saw all year that allowed big plays. You could always beat the Giants over the middle with crossing plays. Bettcher never figured out a scheme to stop them! No one gave up more 30- and 40-yard plays than the Giants! They gave up plays in week 17 of 41, 39, 29, 28, 24, 21, and 20 yards. The short yardage offense was bad. These fatal flaws did in Shurmur today and I question with the 25th ranked defense that gave up 377 yards/game why the hell is Bettcher still employed! They gave up 451 points, an average of 28 points/game. They have 12 games of 27 points or more and 9 games of 31 points given up or more. It’s unbelievable when you look at these totals given up in games: 35, 28, 31, 28, 35, 27, 31, 37, 34, 31, 35, 34. Bettcher should be looking for a job today, especially since most of the 10 draft picks were on defense.
It is disturbing that the pompous, I am smarter than everyone in the room, Dave Gettleman is still there but it is not surprising. They gave Jerry “Reach” a decade to screw things up to the point it was so bad they had to get rid of him. We have to see how they fix this mess. They need to fill the copious holes that this team still has and rebuild it. They need to put a credible product on the field. Based on the last 3-year record, the Giants are the new Cleveland Browns.
I am going to let this situation percolate for a few weeks and I will put out my post season analysis based on how right I was in my Mid-August Preseason Manifesto. By then we may have a better view of where this team is going and I can comment on what has transpired. As always thanks for reading the Prophet’s Pulpit and the Prophet’s Point After. You can always follow me on Twitter for my instant analysis on the upcoming playoffs, Super Bowl and free agency. Happy New Year, it can’t get any worse than it was for the Giants. @tonytheprophet
