I was right on with my call of last week’s game. I called it Detroit 33 and the Giants 24. The real score was Detroit 31-26. Daniel Jones had the pleasure of playing against the worst pass defense in the league. He had his best game and it made him look like Dan Marino but the Giants still lost. Slay was out along with 2 other starters. Danny Dimes was 28 of 41 for 322 with 4 TD’s and no picks. It was his best game. He is probably better than expected but he still has a lot to learn. He had 2 nice throws to Slayton for his only 2 catches and both were for TD’s. The Giants are still only 2-6 and should be 1-7 because Tampa Bay missed a chip shot field goal that would have given them the win at the end of the game.
The Giants couldn’t run the ball thanks to Snacks Harrison. I would not have let him go last year during the season. At the worst case, I would have kept him for all last year. Then you can see where you stand with him with the draft coming up and free agency. The Giants had only 80 yards rushing. They were getting so many passing yards, they didn’t have to force it. Barkley did catch 8 of 10 targets for 79 yards.
Dave Gettleman in an inexplicable move gave up a 3rd and a 5th round pick for Leonard Williams this week from the rival Jets. There is no need for this trade. If the Giants need help it is at edge rusher and linebacker more than they need another defensive lineman. Williams’s career has been far from stellar. Let’s face it, Williams was the 6th overall pick in the 2015 draft. This is the infamous draft that Jerry “Reach” picked Ereck Flowers with the 9th pick. He was one of the biggest busts in Giant’s history. Williams has been a disappointment. He has 17 sacks in 5 years with none this year. You have to consider him a bust given that he was drafted so high. Now he is our problem. Gettleman wants to transform him into our run stopper. The 5th round pick that we gave up turns into a 4th if they sign him for 2020. If they cut him they can get a 3rd round compensatory pick back. He is a risky rental. I don’t know why you wouldn’t get one next year in free agency or in the draft. This team has at least 5 more pressing needs. It’s Gettleman being Gettleman because he is smarter than everyone else on the planet.
The Lions didn’t have to run the ball either. The Giants were rated 28th vs. the pass going into this game and Stafford had a great day completing 25 of 32 for 342 and 3 TD’s and 1 interception. Everybody in the fantasy world rushed to pick up Ty Johnson when Kenyon Johnson went down for the year. He did very little (25 yards rushing on 7 attempts). Detroit used Amendola in the short passing game as the rushing attack. He had 8 targets for 8 receptions and 95 yards. Both Jones and Stafford spread the ball around as 8 pass catchers on both teams had at least 1 reception. Both teams were good on 3rd down conversion with the Giants at 58% and the Lions at 57% accounting for 57 points.
A big problem that the Giants have is that they get behind in the first quarter of many games. They have been outscored 38-0 in the past 4 games in the first quarter. In the Detroit game, they were down 14-0 after 12.5 minutes. This throws them out of their game plan. It also allows the opposition defenses to wind up the pass rush especially on 3rd downs. The Giants were down 12 points and score with 1:19 left in the game to make the final look closer but they never had the lead at any point in this game.
Turning to this week’s game, both teams will want to establish the run for different reasons to win. Since the beginning of 2018 Barkley has the most 100 yard games from scrimmage with 16 games and Elliott has the second most with 15. In the first game, Barkley had 120 yards rushing but only 19 in receiving. The Giants need a good run game to keep Dallas off the field and also keep out of 3rd and long where the Cowboys can rev up the pass rush. They will get the most basic looks on first downs and they will have to take advantage of that. Eli was the QB in the week 1 game and he was able to find Engram for 116 yards and 1 touchdown on 14 targets. Dallas has done a better job of defending the pass. They are 9th giving up only 228 yards a game. They gave up 306 yards to Eli.
Dallas will look to run Zeke early. They want to set up the run so they can throw on the Giants 25th ranked pass defense. Gallup and Cooper had a field day against the Giants get well defense. Gallup had 158 yards and Cooper had 106 and a touchdown. Witten, The Giant Killer, had 15 yards receiving on 3 catches, but he had to get his obligatory touchdown vs. the Giants. Off the top of my head I believe he has 16 touchdowns in 32 games vs. the Giants. These receivers switch sides of the formation making it more difficult to cover especially man to man. The Giants have given up 9 pass plays of 40 yards or more and 13 pass plays of 30 yards or more so far this year. The Cowboys and Dak will be looking to exploit that again. Typically The Giants have been vulnerable to throws the middle of the field and the over the top deep throws.
The Giants have 19 turnovers, the most in the league. Most of these were caused by Daniel Jones. He has to have better ball security and be able to feel the pressure in the pocket. The Giants are bad at home. They are just 3-9 in 2018 and 2019 so far. The only team that they have beat at home was a hapless Redskins team who had to bring in a not ready for prime time Haskins in his first appearance in the NFL. If you take out the Redskins game this year, the Giants have given up 31 points a game average in their 7 other games. Bettcher gas not done a poor job. They have a young team trying to learn on the job and they are getting burnt. Anyway Dak should get the pass game going and throw for over 300 yards. I am calling this game Cowboys 31, the Giants 21.
