An offensive explosion! The Giants destroy the hapless Washington Redskins 40-16. This game was over at the half. The Giants scored 34 points at intermission. 34-0. Game over. So far for Shurmur’s Giants it has been a tale of two halves. First half of this season, the Giants posted a dreadful 1-7 record. Now, thru 5 games in the second half of this season the Giants have a 4-1 record.
With this impressive one-sided win over Washington, the Giants improve to 5-8 on the season. To be fair, the Giants defeated a Washington team playing with their pathetic third string quarterback Mark “Smegma” Sanchez. ( Sanchez’s atrocious numbers: 6-14 for 38 yards TWO interceptions, QBR of TEN) Sanchez, in the holiday spirit, threw two first half interceptions, one was a pick six by Giants safety Curtis Riley which gave the Giants a 7-0 lead. A lead they would never relinquish as they pounded the Redskins into submission. The second interception was snagged by Giants LB Alec Ogletree. Ogletree’s third interception on the year lead to another Giants score.
To put this win into perspective, the Giants have FIVE wins on the year. Four out of the FIVE wins have come against back up quarterbacks. This 2018 season is mirroring the 2013 campaign. Recall, the Giants started the season 0-6 but finished 7-9. The Giants played a bunch of back up quarterbacks which falsely made their record appear respectable with a 7-9 finish.
More perspective on a fraud win: How many times have the Giants scored 30 plus points in the last 3 years, and hang those 30 points in the first half alone?
Turnovers. Again this team has done it again. Yet again, they have won the turnover battle. Another win and a plus in the turnover differential. Plus TWO today. Plus 10 in all 5 wins.
Saquon Barkley. What an electric player! 14 carries for 170 yards which included an explosive 78 yard home run touchdown. Wow! This guy has made a disappointing season more palatable. Look for the Giants to retool the offensive line next year, leverage the team around Barkley to contend in 2019.
Three games left on the year. Can the Giants win out to finish at 8-8? They face three teams who are all in the playoff hunt. So better compettion and a better gauge on how this team has improved in the second half. Stay tuned. More to come.
